Ptahhotep
The Maxims of Ptahhotep
The oldest wisdom text we possess. Vizier of Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi, Ptahhotep frames three destructive forces under Ma'at, the cosmic order. He warns his son against avarice, haughtiness, and the seizure of power. The three destructive drives of a life are named in the first surviving instructional text of Western civilization.
Appetite (avarice) · Approval (haughtiness) · Ambition (power-seizure)
