Authentic360 for Churches
Every gift inventory tells you what you have. Almost none tell you how you are wired to deliver it. Authentic360 for Churches integrates both.
Take the Church EditionThe three ministry-placement failures
Every pastor and elder team we speak with names some version of these three failures. Authentic360 was built to address all three.
Barbara Jackson Davis, "Developing a Volunteer Ministry Placement Strategy," Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2014.
The gap most gift inventories leave open
Every serious spiritual-gifts inventory (PLACE, Wagner-Modified Houts, the DiSCovery instruments) does one thing well: it names the gifts the Holy Spirit has placed in a believer at conversion. That is real and important. It is also incomplete.
Knowing your gifts and knowing how you are wired to deliver them are two different questions. A person can have the gift of teaching and deliver it in six different ways. The Spirit gave the gift. The Father shaped the vessel that carries it. Both givings are from God. Neither replaces the other. Most churches teach only the first.
The Spirit distributes gifts as He wills, at the new-birth moment, for the building up of the body of Christ. Every believer receives at least one. There is no unequipped member.
"To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." · 1 Corinthians 12:7
Ambition, Appetite, and Approval. The three motivational primaries God shaped in you before you were saved. These determine how your spiritual gifts will land through your specific person.
"You formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb." · Psalm 139:13
The two givings, together, are the whole formation picture. The gifts are what the Spirit sends into the world through you. The vessel is how the world will actually experience them. Authentic360 for Churches measures both and shows you the interaction between the two.
One gift, six deliveries
Take Teaching, the same New Testament gift named in Romans 12:7 and Ephesians 4:11. A person with this gift and a Trailblazer vessel teaches nothing like a person with the same gift and an Anchor vessel. Both are legitimate. Both are called. Both can feed the body of Christ. But they will not deliver the gift the same way, they will not thrive in the same environments, and the specific temptations of each will be different.
Here is how the Teaching gift lands through each of the six archetypes:
Direction from the front
Teaches toward the horizon. Compels the room to move. Wants every lesson to end with a change in the hearer's life. Strong under pressure. Can under-shepherd the slower learner.
Structure that lasts
Builds curricula that endure. Sees how doctrine connects into a coherent whole. Trusted for the long series through Romans or the eight-week discipleship class. Can lose the room to the framework.
Fresh angles that reopen the text
Finds what the standard reading missed. Reframes passages the room had stopped hearing. Risk: chases the novel angle when the plain reading was what the room needed.
Doctrine you can feel
The room feels the material because they feel the teacher. Content lands inside personal presence. Best in tight rooms. Risk: softens the hard truth to keep the room comfortable.
Truth held in shared conversation
Teaches through orchestrated group discussion. Draws out others' voices. Every learner ends the class feeling seen. Risk: consensus-shaped teaching that avoids the sharp edge.
Present with the specific soul
The teacher a person calls when they have a life-decision this week. Not platform, but sustained relational instruction over years. Risk: never scales beyond the small circle.
Six teachers with the same gift. Six ministries the Spirit is building. Every one legitimate. None interchangeable. The church that only names the gift misses five-sixths of the discernment.
The A's are also from God
The Three A's are not the enemy of the spiritual life. They are the fuel through which the gifts of the Spirit get delivered. God did not shape you with these three motives by accident. Each one is a good drive given for a reason, and each one becomes destructive only when it is left ungoverned.
Ambition is what gets a person out of bed to build the church God has called them to. Ungoverned, it becomes empire-building in Christ's name. Governed, it becomes the leader who spends themselves for the flock without needing to be recognized for it.
Appetite is what makes a believer alive to the beauty of God's creation and hungry for the Word. Ungoverned, it becomes escape and consumption. Governed, it becomes the freshness of a soul who never stops delighting in what God is doing right now.
Approval is what makes a person tender toward the people God has given them to love. Ungoverned, it becomes people-pleasing that trades truth for harmony. Governed, it becomes the shepherd's willingness to weep with the weeping.
The Three A's are not obstacles to formation. They are the material formation works with. Authentic360 for Churches names your specific configuration of the three and shows you how each of your carried gifts will land through the vessel God built.
What Authentic360 for Churches adds
Authentic360 for Churches begins with everything in the secular Authentic360 assessment, then adds the two modules that make it a complete Christian formation instrument.
The Three A's, the Six Archetypes, Governance across three life domains, the Plumb Line, Leadership Facets, Relational Posture, and Vocation. Every layer of the secular instrument.
Sixteen New Testament gifts, five items per gift, following the historic carried-vs-situational distinction. Tiered output: gifts you carry, gifts present, and gifts the Spirit distributes situationally as He wills.
The section no other instrument gives you. For each carried gift, how your specific vessel amplifies its healthy expression and where it puts the same gift at risk. This is the "how to lead with your gifts" reading.
Sample of the integration reading
Below is a sample from a real Authentic360 report for a person whose archetype is Catalyst (Appetite-led, with Transcendence-anchored plumb line) and whose carried gifts include Faith, Prophecy, Teaching, Wisdom, and Discernment. For each carried gift, the report names what the vessel does for the gift and what the vessel puts at risk.
| Carried Gift | How your vessel amplifies it | How your vessel puts it at risk |
|---|---|---|
| Faith | Contagious in tight rooms. Your Approval is relationally weighted; the few closest people carry your confidence with you when you speak it. | Moderate Feedback Orientation is the seam where private certainty slips in and gets labeled trust in God. |
| Prophecy | Transcendence at the ceiling gives the word downward-vertical authority. High animation lets the room feel the weight. | Under load, Ambition surges. Personal vision can wear prophetic clothing. The word gets urgent for reasons that are not from God. |
| Teaching | Fresh angles that reopen a passage. Pioneer pull surfaces what others miss. High animation carries the material. | Vision can outrun the plain sense of the text. Reframe becomes exegesis in service of the horizon rather than of the passage. |
| Wisdom | Enterprise-domain governance is your strongest. Applied wisdom lands at vocational decision points. Cost-earned by lived experience. | D-personality opinion can turn discernment into prescription. Wisdom offered as decree stops being wisdom. |
This is what most spiritual-gifts inventories do not give you. Not the label of the gift, but the specific way your particular soul delivers it, and the specific place your particular soul is most likely to stumble.
The theological principle underneath
Wise church leaders across two thousand years have named a distinction Scripture also names: some spiritual gifts the Spirit settles in a believer as part of who they consistently are, and others the Spirit distributes in specific moments, to specific people, when the believer is listening.
Authentic360 for Churches addresses only the first. The carried gifts are what your life shows a stable pattern of, what your church would recognize about you over years, what the Spirit has made a settled part of your ministry. The situational gifts remain the Spirit's business alone.
"All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as He wills." · 1 Corinthians 12:11
Your report will name your carried gifts explicitly. It will also honor what it cannot see: that beyond the gifts named in your report, the Spirit gives what He gives, when He gives it, to whom He wills. Remain open. The report is a starting point for your church community's discernment. It is not the final word.
A philosophy shift
The traditional recruitment model asks a room to fill open slots. Nursery needs three more workers. The parking team needs four. Please sign up. It is honest about the church's need, and it produces sign-up churn: warm bodies in the wrong seats, quiet resignations six weeks later, and a permanent low-grade guilt in the pew about serving.
The gift-based model asks a different question. Not "where is the hole?" but "how has God designed you, and where does that design want to be spent?" The role gets filled by a person whose wiring fits it, and the person gets to exercise the gifts they were given. Sustainable service is what happens when the two match.
Ask people what God is trying to do in their lives based upon how He has designed them. · Leith Anderson, cited in Davis (2014)
Authentic360 is a gift-based recruiting instrument. It gives your placement conversation a real starting point: here is how this person is wired, here is what they carry, here is where that has the best chance of taking root.
A research finding worth knowing
Volunteering runs in couples. When one spouse is already serving, the other is dramatically more likely to serve too. It is one of the most consistent predictors of adult volunteer behavior in the sociological literature.
30% of married men volunteer.
of men married to a woman who volunteers volunteer.
38% of married women volunteer.
of women married to a man who volunteers volunteer.
The practical implication for a church placement strategy is direct. Get one spouse into a well-fitting ministry, and you have quietly increased the probability the other will join a ministry too. The couples in your pews are a leverage point most placement systems overlook.
Rotolo & Wilson, Journal of Marriage and Family (2006), cited in Davis (2014).
The mechanism that scales
The bottleneck in most ministry-placement systems is the pastor. Every real placement conversation ends up on their calendar, so most placement conversations never happen. New Song Bible Fellowship Church in Bowie, Maryland ran a different model in doctoral fieldwork: they trained lay volunteers as ministry placement coaches who walk each member through their assessment report and connect them to a ministry that fits their wiring.
The coach is not a counselor and not a spiritual director. The coach is a trained lay member who can read the report, ask the right follow-up questions, and hand the member off to the right ministry lead. The pastor teaches the framework once. The coaches run the conversations. Placement scales without the pastor being the funnel.
This is not theoretical. It came out of a Doctor of Ministry field project (Davis, 2014), and it is the model Authentic360 for Churches is built to plug into. The assessment gives the coach something concrete to work with. The coach gives the member the conversation that turns a report into a placement.
The value proposition, said plainly
Every church has watched a personality test come and go: everyone takes it, everyone learns their type, and six months later nothing has changed about who is serving where. The report by itself is not the intervention. The report becomes an intervention when a trained coach sits down with the member and works through it.
Authentic360 for Churches is designed for exactly that. It is an assessment plus a repeatable coaching conversation your lay leaders can run. The report is structured so a coach with modest training can walk any member through their Three A's, their carried gifts, and the integration reading, and land the conversation on a next step: a specific ministry to try, a specific person to shadow, a specific class to sit in.
Contrast the two:
They learn some vocabulary about themselves. They file the report. Nothing changes about which ministry they are in.
A trained coach reads the report with them, asks the follow-up questions the report raises, and hands them a specific next step. The report becomes a placement decision.
The leadership use case
Most personality tests give church leaders language they already have. Most spiritual-gifts inventories name what a discerning member of the congregation could probably have named without the instrument. Authentic360 for Churches gives your leadership team something new: the specific way each member is wired to deliver their gifts, the specific temptations that particular delivery makes possible, and the specific formation invitation the member's life is currently being asked into.
That report becomes a working document for an elder or staff conversation, a mentoring pairing, a ministry placement decision, a small-group leader briefing, a marriage-and-family conversation. It is not a label to hand out. It is a mirror the member can bring back into the room, over years, as the questions of their ministry change.
"There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit ... to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." · 1 Corinthians 12:4-7
